About Us

We are so happy that you stopped by our website! Mill Street Baby is a natural, organic and sustainable baby and mama goods shop located in downtown Sylva, NC - owned and operated by Sara and Nick Ross. Our goal is to bring baby and mama goods that are low impact to local families that otherwise can not be gotten without driving an hour or more. We also desire to make these goods available to a wider audience through our online shop who desire to find many sustainable options in one location.

So, who are the Ross’ you might ask...how did you get here...why a baby store? Well, our story is a little unconventional, but it’s quite the adventure, so come along for the ride!

Nick and I were married in June of 2008 - and after only 6 months and some job changes, we made the decision to throw a dart and see where we landed. We ended up moving to Wilmington, NC and fell in love with not only the NC culture, but the people. We had moved halfway across the states with no jobs, and after roaming around the NC and SC areas over the next two years, we ended up needing to return to Arkansas where our hometowns were to regroup and figure out what was next for us.

Shortly after arriving back in Arkansas, we found out that we were pregnant with our first child. In addition, Nick decided to head into grad school, and our world turned upside down. While I stayed at home with our son, Nick went to full-time school and work, and only two years later, we found out we were expecting our second child - a baby girl. After she arrived and Nick graduated with his degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, we all sought comfort in a great job about an hour South of where we had been living. We purchased our first home there, settled down for several years, and both ended up working jobs that we loved.

But something was still missing. If you ask anyone who knows us from Arkansas, they’ll all tell you the same thing. We talked about North Carolina nearly every time our mouths opened, the desire to one day return always growing and never growing dim. In November of 2017 we took a family trip all over the Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina areas, but never did we find such freedom, excitement, adventure, and that feeling of home, as we did in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. After that trip, we knew we had to get back. Finishing up the remodel on our house and getting it sold were only minor catches in the journey back East, and in 2018, we once again threw a dart (this time specifically in the areas west of Asheville) and landed in Sylva, NC.

Over the last several months, we have fallen in love with North Carolina all over again, and found ourselves head over hills with downtown Sylva. Having moved once again with no jobs - some may call us foolish, some may call us free - Nick found employment as a Licensed Therapist, but I found myself wondering what I could do to help contribute to not only my family, but the beautiful area we live in. Having had two babies myself, both my husband and I quickly realized the need for natural, organic and sustainable items that modern mamas are searching for in their pregnancies and for their littlest ones. After recognizing the need, I realized it was one that I could fill and wanted to fill. Thus, Mill Street Baby was born!
